Summer Holiday Guide, Booderee National Park school holiday program

Booderee National Park

Spend some time exploring the wonders of Booderee National Park, featuring an assortment of kids' holiday activities. This is a fantastic opportunity for the young ones to switch off from their devices, dive into the wilderness and get to know more about our rich, Aboriginal culture. The Booderee summer school holiday program includes a variety of Indigenous experiences including Campfire Yarns; Traditional Aboriginal Weaving Workshops; Introductions to Aboriginal Tools and Technology; and a Curious Kids session which provides information about fossils, whales, sharks and plenty more insights on the surrounding natural habitat. Over several weeks, children can experience, explore and encounter the natural beauty of the Shoalhaven whilst building a stronger connection to this special piece of land. Bookings are essential for all the special events, so make sure to download the Summer School Holiday Program in order to secure your place. While you're here, make sure to also head off as a family on some walking trails, discover the stunning Cape St George Lighthouse or meander through the Botanic Gardens.

Arts & Crafts

Help the kids get their creative juices flowing at one of our many arts and crafts workshops scheduled over the summer break. A holiday project is always fun and a lovely souvenir to take home after your stay. Over at the House of Jules, there is a massive selection of creative workshops on offer throughout all of January, and the majority of them are just $25! The little ones can take their pick from classes such as Clay Bowl Making, Easy Peasy Prints, and Cubist Portrait painting, just to name a few. For those who want to spend more time honing their artwork skills, the half-day workshops are typically 3-4hrs in duration, allowing more time for instruction and are open to both adults and children over 12 years old. This Old House Studio is also hosting a bunch of kids classes in January for $55-$65 including Paint Pouring, Screenprinting, Macrame, Mosaics, and Scrunchie Making. All workshops include morning tea with flavoured milk, Berry Donuts and fruit!

Arts & Crafts

Shoalhaven Regional Gallery's "Creative Kids Program" features a diverse range of art experiences for children aged 3 and up and often relate to the exhibitions on show or works from the collection. Take your pick from Digital Photography, Sun Print Patterns, Shadow Monsters and more! Prices range from just $10-$25. Our Shoalhaven Libraries at Ulladulla, Sanctuary Point and Nowra are also hosting various free workshops such as Lego Challenge, Origami, Dragon Puppets and Stop Motion classes. There will also be a bunch of free movie screenings plus a couple of toddler discos. Get creative at Jervis Bay Maritime Museum with an Acrylic Paint Pouring class taught by Karen from Free In Spirit Creative. Although this workshop is open to children on their own, it's a super fun activity for adult and child to take part in together ($65 child, $145 child & child). This workshop is suitable for absolute beginners and school-age children (five years old and up). Please wear old clothes or an apron!

Outdoor Adventures

Dive In Movies are scheduled all summer at Nowra Aquatic Center, so grab your floaties and watch a family favourite from a whole new perspective! In fact we have a great range of aquatic centres (some with slides!) and two seapools across the Shoalhaven, so you can make a splash no matter what the weather is doing. Cast a line at one of the Greenwell Point Kids Fishing Workshops this summer. Children aged eight - 14 can get involved and learn how fish responsibly in a safe and fun environment. These NSW DPI fishing workshops include fun lessons on fishing techniques, information on NSW fishing rules, and best methods to maximise released fish survival. Cost per child includes quality rod and reel, shirt, hat, tackle box, show bag and bookings are essential so please email to secure a spot. For those who'd like to get out on the water for some tranquil exploration, Jervis Bay Kayak are running 90-minute Kids Kayak Clinics in Huskisson.

Outdoor Adventures

A walk around in nature is a great way for the entire family to unwind and really take a break. Our pals over at South Coast Kids are experts in family-friendly explorations across the Shoalhaven. Take a look at their comprehensive guide that will inspire all types of holiday discoveries over the next few weeks. A visit to Shoalhaven Zoo is always a family-favourite day out. Located amongst spectacular natural rock formations and bushland along the banks of the beautiful Shoalhaven River, the zoo boasts an extensive collection of native and exotic animals. You'll love the wonderful experiences here including Lion Feeding Encounters, Monkey Madness and Meerkat Mania. Speaking of monkeys, actually, just next door at Trees Adventure, the little ones can channel their inner monkeys and roam the treetops on some epic ropes courses! Spending a few hours high in the sky is an awesome activity, especially for the more adventurous kids! Want something a little slower pace? How about Afternoon Tea with the Alpacas at Woolamia (near Huskisson) in Jervis Bay?

Little Foodies

This will be a sure-fire hit for any children with a sweet tooth! During the summer holidays, The Treat Factory in Berry will be opening up their Bean Bar to the little ones with their delicious chocolate making workshops. This fun, educational and hands-on workshop will give all participants the chance to learn more about chocolate, taste a bunch of different flavours and make some Belgian chockie treats to take home at the end of class. Each workshop runs for about 1 hour and is recommended for kids 5-years-old and up. If that's still not quite enough chocolate action for you, families can also book in for some demonstrations and tasting sessions at The Treat Factory!
