With world-class surfing destinations, calm beaches, flowing rivers and serene lakes, discover our unspoilt waterways with a variety of activities that offer endless fun in the sun. Whether you want to just make a small splash at the beach or really dive deep into some underwater exploration, there are a variety of watersports on offer that will suit all styles and skill levels.

Surfing

The Shoalhaven is a breeding ground for epic surfing talent, with professionals like Pam Burridge and Tyler Wright having taken the world by storm. Our many local surf heroes love encouraging newcomers to the sport, so take the opportunity to learn to surf during your South Coast holiday. We have many surf schools and expert instructors scattered down our massive coastline. They will teach you all the tips and tricks to have you shredding waves in no time.

For those of you who are already pretty handy on a board, make sure to venture down to Culburra Beach, the hometown of surfing legends Tyler & Owen Wright. Or if you feel like getting all the buds together for a surf-filled vacation, stay near Mollymook or Bawley Point. There’s tonnes of accommodation just a short walk from the beach and fast, barrelling waves that will really get your heart pumping.

Canoeing & Kayaking

Venturing off land and opting for the water, is a great way to discover the marvels of the region. Canoeing or kayaking are both great ways to travel to secluded spots which can’t be reached by foot. Jervis Bay is a beautiful place to explore for newcomers, who can opt for a tour with Sea Kayak Jervis Bay or Jervis Bay Kayak and Paddlesports. You’ll have the chance to see dolphins, penguins and seals in winter plus whales during June/July and October/November. Stop at the captivating Hole in the Wall Beach, an amazing spot for some stunning Instragam photos.

There is also the stunning Shoalhaven River. Stretching over 300kms, it runs from Middle Mountain, near Moruya, all the way to Shoalhaven Heads. The river collects over 30 creeks and smaller bodies of water along its way out towards the sea. From flatwater to white water, there are so many options for paddling along its length and plenty of other river life activities as you explore along the way.

Shoalhaven Gorge is a true hidden gem. The peaceful bush setting, amazing escarpment views and sunken forest sections will make you feel like you’re in another world. Launch at Tallowa Dam and experience many highlights along the way, including the narrow gorge section featuring spectacular high cliffs filled with beautiful birdsong. Discover this beautiful part of Kangaroo Valley by grabbing a rental or booking a guided tour with Kangaroo Valley KayaksKangaroo Valley Safaris, Kangaroo Valley Adventure Co or Valley Outdoors.

Diving & Snorkelling

Dive deeper beneath the surface to discover our Shoalhaven underwater world. With an abundance of marine life and excellent visibility, there’s plenty of opportunities to gaze upon our wonderful sea animals.

Both scuba diving and snorkelling are very popular watersports for locals and visitors alike. The Jervis Bay Marine Park is a hotspot for these underwater activities. This vast, beautiful and complex ecosystem is fondly known as the South Coast’s alternative to the Great Barrier Reef and you can embark on a guided adventure with Woebegone FreediveDive Jervis Bay or Crest Diving.

Planning to snorkel on your own? We highly recommend swimming in the calm bays and beaches inside Jervis Bay or those that surround Currarong and Abrahams Bosom Reserve which are often very peaceful in the right conditions. Further south, Jones Beach tucked into the lee of Bannisters Point near Mollymook is another excellent location that’s often protected from the swell and one of the region’s only pebble beaches. Get in touch with Ulladulla Dive and Adventure who can guide you along your aquatic discovery and check out our snorkelling guide for all the best snorkel spots.

Stand Up Paddleboarding & Kitesurfing

Our sheltered bays, beaches and inlets are excellent spots to have a go at stand up paddleboarding. If you’re a complete newcomer to this watersport, never fear. It’s not as hard to learn the ropes as you might think. Learn how to “SUP” in the sheltered waters of Sussex Inlet with our knowledgeable instructors at Sussex Inlet Stand Up Paddle.

Jervis Bay Stand Up Paddle will come to your location of choice too. They also know all the best spots according to conditions of the day and even offer sunset SUP tours. For something a bit different (which is also tonnes of fun!) book a Monster SUP tour. All of your friends can get onto one giant stand up paddleboard and explore the waterways together. It’s always a great laugh and we guarantee you’ll have many funny stories at the end of it!

For all the kitesurfers out there, head to Moona Moona Creek, near Huskisson or Seven Mile Beach. In the summer months it’s relatively calm on our waters. The southerly winds start to pack a punch during winter. Not for the faint-hearted but the extreme sports enthusiasts will definitely have a blast!
