Canoeing & Kayaking the Shoalhaven

The waters of the Shoalhaven are paddling heaven with its extensive network of rivers, estuaries, lakes and beaches. The world is a gentler place when viewed from a kayak skimming over some of the cleanest water on the planet and exploring nature’s best-kept secrets. With over 100 beaches, 170km of coastline and a miryad of waterways, you’re sure to find your own favourite. The Shoalhaven has some of the most spectacular kayaking locations in the world, so we wanted to compile all the most important kayaking information in one place to get our keen kayakers started on planning their adventures. We have put together a Map of Shoalhaven kayaking launch spots so you can find great places to launch your kayak, or scroll down to the bottom of the page to download our full kayaking guide.

If you are heading into the ocean, there are many important things you should know before venturing out. Please take the time to review the Australian National Guidelines for Whales and Dolphin Watching and look at the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Regulations from the federal government. We want everyone to have fun in the sea, which means our marine animals too! Being mindful ensures that we are never interfering with feeding and mating habits. We also care deeply about your safety so please read the RMS Safety Information for kayaks and Paddlesafe Waterways Guide before adventuring, especially if you are new to the sport.

Kayaking Clyde River

The white sands and crystal clear water of Jervis Bay, make paddling a dream. With sixteen white sand beaches to explore and a huge array of marine life and geology, a paddle around Jervis Bay is a pretty magical experience. Hire a kayak from Jervis Bay Kayaks and Paddlesports or Sea Kayak Jervis Bay at Huskisson where it’s easy to pull into the bay. Head south towards Booderee or north toward Callala and Currambene Creek and keep an eye out for dolphins and whales. We recommend taking some snorkelling gear and pulling in at some beaches for a paddle and explore of the unique marine environment. For those who want a more epic adventure, the sea cliffs of point perpendicular are a wild ride on a kayak but offer some pretty incredible sheet cliffs and caves to explore.

Whether you’re after a lazy few hours paddling near town on the Kangaroo River or want to take on an epic 4 day camp and pack raft adventure, Kangaroo Valley has super easy hire options, try Kangaroo Valley Kayaks or Kangaroo Valley Safaris. Paddle away from civilisation through beautiful escarpments and unspoilt wilderness, only accessible from the water. Bendeela, Tallowa Dam and the Upper Shoalhaven River are all great destinations from the valley.
