Coolangatta Mountain stands out as a distinctive landmark on the Shoalhaven river plain. Coolangatta takes its name from an Aboriginal word Culunghutti. Sitting at the base of the mountain, Coolangatta Estate is the site of the first European settlement on the South Coast of NSW. The restored convict built village features panoramic views, award winning Estate wines, 4 star accommodation and restaurant. Located close to major tourist centres and beaches, the 130ha Estate is surrounded on all sides by picturesque vineyards overlooking Shoalhaven Heads. While you're at the estate ensure you don't miss out on 'Bigfoot'. Bigfoot is a huge 4WD open sided tractor-bus that carries tourists on a one-hour tour of the historic property. On the northern side of the mountain, on a 75 acre working farm sits Mountain Ridge Winery. The setting from their cellar, cafe and restaurant offer a stunning view of Coolangatta mountain and surrounding farmlands and often feature live music on a Sunday afternoon.
Further upstream along the Shoalhaven River, Two Figs Winery sits perched on top of one of the foothills of Coolangatta Mountain. Offering amazing sunsets over the Shoalhaven River and a fantastic cellar door it is well worth a visit. Take a drive through the farming communities of Far Meadow and Back Forest through Back Forest Road, which takes you along the scenic farmlands and behind Coolangatta Mountain through to Broughton Creek on the Shoalhaven River - a favourite spot with fishermen.
