Uncle Noel Wellington shares stories through his woodwork and art. His poles have long stood outside the Beecroft Weapon’s Range and Peninsula Visitor’s Office at Point Perpendicular, reflecting the respectful relationship between Defence and the Jerrinja people, established since the 1800s.

In this session, Uncle Noel to discusses his carved depiction of Bundoola, acquired by the Australian Museum, along with the Black Cockatoo Shield. Bundarwa, now known as Point Perpendicular, is home to Bundoola, a revered ancestor.

In the 1960s, Noel’s grandfather, David Carpenter, told the story of Bundoola, “Bundoola could control the sea, the winds, the lightning, and the rain. He could make the sea rough or calm, and command different winds.” This tale, “Bundoola – King of the Sea,” is displayed at the Visitor’s Centre.

Uncle Noel wishes to recreate his carved piece as a bronze sculpture, possibly in Huskisson, to honour Bundoola’s story as people gaze at Point Perpendicular. This project aims to draw attention to Bundoola’s legacy and celebrate the Jerrinja people.
