Art historian and inaugural curator of Australian Decorative Arts at the National Gallery of Australia, John McPhee, presents a floor talk on the two artists’ approaches to ceramics.
John McPhee was the Founding Curator of Australian decorative arts and Senior Curator of Australian art at the National Gallery of Australia from 1980-1992, as well as Deputy Director at the National Gallery of Victoria, 1992-1996. John has been an enthusiast for Stephen’s work since the late 1970s and like Merric Boyd, John sees Stephen’s work as being outside the fashionable ceramic tradition of his time.
