The Shoalhaven prides its self on being an inclusive holiday destination, for each and every person to be able to enjoy. Many of our local businesses and tour operators are equipped with accessible facilities to make your South Coast holiday a blast. In collaboration with It's Heaven, we've put together a go-to guide of inclusive places to eat, stay and play while in the Shoalhaven.
Explore the clear blue waters and white sands of Jervis Bay and Huskisson. This destination is filled with many beach side activities that are suitable for travellers of any ability. The wharf on Currambene St at Huskisson is fitted out with wheelchair accessible jetty ramp and floating pontoon, providing a safe place to cast a line for a fishing session.
Jervis Bay Wild & Husky Ferry Service
For anyone who wants to get a bit closer to the action, book a dolphin or whale watching tour with Jervis Bay Wild. Their Port Venture vessel is perfectly equipped to service guests with disabilities, decked out with an easy wheel on/off ramp. From the balcony you'll be able to see Jervis Bay's beautiful whales and dolphins swimming about in that crystal clear water! The more adventurous types might even want to get up close and personal for a snorkel with the marine life - a hoist can lift you into the boom net or off the back of the boat. If you're interested in a shorter journey out on the water, Husky Ferry Service operates ten-minute tours from Myola to Huskisson on their wheelchair accessible boat.
Your home away from home should be a comfortable space and decked out with all the necessary amenities to make your stay as enjoyable as possible. For a little slice of luxury, Sea La Vie at Shoalhaven Heads provides an elegant four-bedroom house that's been purposefully designed for those with mobility needs. It features an internal lift and flat access downstairs bathroom and is just a short walk from beautiful Seven Mile Beach. Those who prefer to stay in the middle of nature will fall in love with Back 2 Earth Farmstay in Berry. This eco-friendly BnB is a delightful rural retreat that will really make you unwind and reset. Surrounded by lush rainforest and beautiful mountain ranges, it's the picture perfect country setting. The sunset cottage is wheelchair accessible and accommodates up to seven people.
Restaurants and Cafés
An important part of going on holiday is being able to treat yourself and grab a delicious bite to eat! Many of the Shoalhaven's cafés, restaurants and wineries are wheelchair accessible, making it easy for the entire family to have a South Coast foodie experience. Huskisson Bakery Cafe is the perfect pit stop for some yummy pastries and cakes, with nearby Pilgrims serving up an awesome vegetarian menu if you're after a bigger meal. Both eateries are wheelchair accessible with disabled amenities and are just a stone's throw away from the seaside. After a day of exploring you'll be ready for dinner and can head down to Thai Riverside Restaurant or Wharf Rd in Nowra.
Free Beach Wheelchair Hire
A trip to the Shoalhaven usually includes a visit to the ocean. Now, those who are less mobile can also enjoy our white, sandy shores thanks to free beach wheelchair hire at ten different locations. These are currently available at the following Surf Clubs: Shoalhaven Heads, Culburra Beach, Sussex Inlet Beach and Mollymook Beach. White Sands Huskisson Beach / Moona Moona Creek Holiday Haven Park, Lake Tabourie Holiday Haven Park and Palm Beach Greville’s Corner Store provide access to these wheelchair services too. Explore your way through the bio-diverse environment between Currumbene Creek and the Maritime Museum by venturing along Mangrove Boardwalk Track. The beautiful 1.4km path is wheelchair accessible and visitors can catch views of Grey Mangroves, River Mangroves, various bird and crab species, as well as other interesting flora and fauna. Accessible bathrooms are located on the Jervis Bay Maritime Museum grounds and also inside the museum.
For all the keen fishing enthusiasts, we recommend setting up at Sussex Inlet which is very accommodating for less mobile visitors. Sit on the wide jetty with your rod for the day and try your luck at catching that night's dinner! The boat ramp is wheelchair accessible and toilets are close by. A great picnic area and playground make it an ideal location for the entire family.
Our Shoalhaven region is a holiday destination for every single person to be able to enjoy. We hope to make everyone feel welcome, safe and comfortable every time they head down to the South Coast. And most importantly we want the entire family to get in on all the fun - because there's plenty of it down here!
