Nowra is the commercial hub of the Shoalhaven, located on the banks of the glorious Shoalhaven River. There is plenty of accommodation in hotels, motels, self-contained apartments, holiday houses and campgrounds, and lots to do and see in the local area. It’s a convenient base to explore the beaches and wineries of the Shoalhaven, with nearby Kangaroo Valley and Berry offering village vibes.

It was only after drastic floods in the nearby township of Terara in 1870 that Nowra became established in its own right. The river and surrounding escarpments are an adventurer’s delight, with zip-lining at Shoalhaven Zoo’s Tree’s Adventure, rock climbing with Outdoor Raw and Climb Nowra and walks such as Ben’s Walk. The river is also home to Shoalhaven River Cruise, freshwater camping, ski and wakeboard opportunities and excellent dining opportunities such as Macaw’s Nest and Wharf Road.

Nowra has a mural trail throughout the Central Business District and a number of historic buildings and houses dating from the Victorian era, including the gracious Meroogal, an Historic Houses Trust property with its contents a tribute to the four generations of Australian women who lived there.

Be sure to check out the Fleet Air Arm Museum, which contains a wonderful display of military and civil aircraft and check the calendars for the latest events at Shoalhaven Regional Gallery, Shoalhaven Entertainment Centre and Shoalhaven City Turf Club.
