Many surfers favour Culburra Beach, a beloved surf destination in town and the stomping ground of renowned pros like the Wright family.

Culburra Beach, along with its neighboring Warrain Beach, is linked by Penguin Head, a prime spot for spotting passing whales and observing resident seals. There is a surf club, with summer patrols keeping the beach safe. Culburra Beach is patrolled daily from mid-December through the end of January at the beach’s southern end and the northern end of Warrain Beach near the surf club. Remember to always swim between the red and yellow flags for your safety. It’s worth noting that Warrain Beach isn’t advisable for families with small children or novice ocean swimmers.

Families and children can explore the south end of Culburra Beach, which offers a haven from south swells and winds. Here, the waves offer short and gentle rides, the quality varying based on the sandbar formation. For an even more sheltered option, Currarong Beach, a short drive from Culburra, provides excellent protection against substantial swells and winds.

Watch out for rocks near the shore, particularly around the southern corner of the beach. Should the waves appear lackluster at the south end of Culburra, consider venturing to the more exposed middle section of the beach for potentially better conditions.
